Materiality of the Desert
In its most essential form, this traditional craft of the Kuwaiti desert, reflects both the origins and basics of these nomadic roots. Its origins are the natural materials of the desert that the Bedouin, through skill, good use, and sound adaptation, were able to employ into abundant means to survive and thrive in their harsh environments. Its basic forms reflect the various techniques and life skills made useful through the creation of tools and crafts related to life in the desert.
Kuwait’s al sadu weavings were essentially utilitarian; made for the use of the family as tent parts, furnishings, and personal containers. For the Bedouin, their textiles were a testimony to their practical achievement, manual dexterity, and aesthetic values. They also acted as indicators of status and privilege for the family, reflecting the weaver’s background and the social standing of her tribe.
Adaptation to the natural environment through the skillful development of weaving techniques has been an integral part of nomadic Bedouin life, dating back thousands of years, all the way to the domestication of animals by man. Essentially a practical skill, wool weaving is not only one of man’s oldest crafts, but also a highly developed one, allowing for immense creativity and artistic expression.
SADI 2024 invites artists to immerse themselves in the intricacies of al sadu, both in its materiality and application, exhibiting pieces that reflect the knowledge and curiosity they have built to bridge past and present, practicality and expression, as well as constraint and innovation.
