Ancestral Bonds
Born out of necessity and an innate yearning for creative expression, alsadu weaving, with all its
intricacies, is more than just a craft – it’s a living testament to the resilience, creativity, and spirit
of the Bedouin people. For generations, Bedouin women architected homes and useful tools out
of threads, passing down their craftsmanship to their daughters like heirlooms – each loom a
conduit for ancestral wisdom, each thread a connection to our past, and each motif a narrative
revealing remnants of our heritage.

As modernization strips away the element of necessity out of alsadu’s equation, we find
ourselves reinterpreting this traditional craft to ensure its cultural continuity, while preserving its
legacy, in what’s become a celebration of the enduring threads between our past and present.
SADI 2025: Ancestral Bonds invites artists to draw upon the symbols, techniques, and historical
context of alsadu weaving to explore our personal and collective identities, creating works that
bridge the traditional and the modern. Through this fusion, artists will utilize different mediums to
find new expressions of our heritage that resonate with the present moment.
